Today, Cooperative Network submitted comments regarding the Department of Natural Resources proposed rule regarding water run-off, NR 151. The department is specifically looking to reduce groundwater nitrate pollution in areas of the state susceptible to groundwater contamination.
The comments related to the Economic Impact Analysis (EIA) of the rule. We pointed out that there will be significant costs for dairy farmers due to the need for new manure storage, increased wear and tear on rural roads, and additional labor costs. We also detailed the increased costs to Farm Supply Cooperatives which primarily will result from the bulk of fertilizer being spread in the spring. As a result, Farm Supply Cooperatives will need to do more work in an already tight and unpredictable spring season. This will require additional fertilizer storage, machines, tenders and employees.
