Seeing the Elephant: Telling the Cooperative Story with Cross-Sectoral Awareness

Cathy Statz, Cooperative Outreach Specialist, NCBA CLUSA, & Outreach Specialist, International Centre for Co-operative Management at Saint Mary’s University

You know your own cooperative from the inside out. Yet we have much to learn from the rich history and vibrant energy of cooperatives across the spectrum: large and small, established and emerging, near and far. We can build bridges of understanding and engagement by first understanding – then sharing – the model’s origins, key events, and developments, from the Rochdale Pioneers to the Capper-Volstead Act to the Cooperative Principles. Cathy Statz, past president of the Association of Cooperative Educators, will talk about the history and ecosystem of the model and movement, and share strategies for communicating the “cooperative difference” – especially during 2025, the International Year of Cooperatives.
